Hispanic Heritage Month: Meet three people who made a difference while building the labor movement

There’s a crucial intersection between Hispanic American culture and the labor movement, and it’s an important component of our celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 – October 15).

Today, and throughout history, American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America have made myriad contributions to the advancement of the labor movement. What’s more, those past achievements have made all unions stronger.

Enforcing our Contract for All Represented Employees is a Union Priority

When one of our Unit 15 custodians was reprimanded about the state of his route by a supervisor in the open, and in front of other people, it violated our contract’s language that these types of meetings should be held in private.

Our custodian had been off for the previous two days and was just returning to work. What’s more, it wasn’t even this custodian’s supervisor, but from another area in the building. This supervisor chose not to talk to the custodian’s direct supervisor, even when asked.

Ratification Vote Count Scheduled for Saturday, 9/9; Results Expected Same Day
Members invited to observe counting at Local 1000 headquarters

After a months-long bargaining and organizing effort to win a contract that respects us, protects us, and pays us, the two-week ratification voting period ends on Friday, September 8, 2023. The process of counting the members’ votes will happen on Saturday, September 9.

The results of the ratification vote will be emailed and posted to our website this weekend.

Sorting and counting of the ballots begins at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 9, at Local 1000 headquarters in our one-story building at 1325 S Street in Sacramento.

Prison Closure Update – California Correctional Facility Mitigation Continues

As part of the overall closure process for the California City Correctional Facility (CAC), California Correctional Health Care Services (CCHCS) is offering impacted employees in select classifications the ability to affirmatively participate in the mitigation phase related to the closure. This is the phase where the department identifies employees who can be transferred into vacant positions in other locations of the area impacted by the layoff — in this case, Kern County.
