Chuckawalla Valley State Prison (CVSP) Closure

Overview

Chuckawalla Valley State Prison (CVSP) Closure

Chuckawalla Valley State Prison (CVSP) is scheduled to close as of March 31, 2025. Our Union is working hard to ensure that all our SEIU Local 1000-represented employees are supported throughout the process.

The first phase of this closure is the Voluntary Transfer Process (VTP). SEIU Local 1000 has negotiated an agreement with CDCR and CCHCS to support employees who choose to participate in this process.

You can find that agreement here

As we continue to work closely with the Department on this issue, we will be posting updates. We encourage you to check back regularly. To ensure you never miss an update, contact our Member Resource Center (MRC) at 866.471.SEIU (7348) and make sure they have your current contact information.

Questions or concerns related to the closure? Those can be directed to cvspclosure@seiu1000.org and someone from our team will answer you in 24 to 48 hours.

Update as of May 1, 2024

Our Union wanted to provide some clarifying information regarding the VTP for impacted employees at CDCR. The VTP packets provided by the department to employees only provide viable vacancies in four counties in Southern California. With that in mind, the department made statements to our Union that they are willing to work with employees if employees are interested in participating in VTP in other counties in the state on a case-by-case basis.

We are aware that the department made conflicting statements during some of their informational sessions, informing employees that there are no other VTP opportunities outside of the counties already listed in the VTP packets. Our Union has been in contact with Labor Relations at CDCR and has verified that the statements made by CDCR management at those informational sessions are incorrect and that the department is indeed willing to work with employees to seek viable positions statewide.

If you are interested in utilizing the VTP to get to a position at an institution outside of the counties already listed, we recommend reaching out to the SSRO team at CDCRHRSSROHelpDesk@cdcr.ca.gov and informing our Union team that you have made this request of the department so that we are able to follow up and make sure you are getting the assistance you need.

Our Union team can be reached for clarity on this and other closure-related issues at cvspclosure@seiu1000.org
