Dental Source Provides Union Members with Affordable Oral Health Care
Union membership is a tool for building a community wherever we live, sharing our experiences on the job, our strategies to build power for our coworkers and communities, and sharing the services we all need to thrive. In that spirit of serving those who need it, Mike Ashen of DENTALSource is carrying on his family’s tradition of partnering with unions to provide members the care they need.
“My father, who passed away a couple of years ago, started this program up and down the Central Valley in 1979,” said Ashen. “He was working with unions because he felt it was important to be a union shop and to encourage union members to take advantage of the dental benefits they had in their contracts.”

“We started doing this program when SEIU Local 1000 over 20 years ago,” said Ashen. “We’ve always supported the work of the unions here and our offices are all union.” DENTALSource offices are represented by our sister unions, SEIU Local 1021 and SEIU Local 521.
The rising cost of living has created issues for state workers in the Central Valley, many of whom are now establishing care for themselves and family members while fighting for a contract that expands their benefits. This program, which includes examinations, x-rays, cleanings, fillings, and other procedures, has no out-of-pocket cost. Only major procedures like extractions and crowns require a copayment.
“We always felt that being able to extend a discount to union members in the Valley is the right way for our business to operate,” said Ashen. “They’ve faced high copays, expensive care, and often work paycheck to paycheck. We want to serve a high volume of patients, while also maintaining a close relationship to our patients.”
At the end of the day, Mike and his family believe these savings are part of a relationship between private practices, union members, and the State of California. When we build these programs together, we can all benefit, and the savings can be shared between workers and practices across the state.
“With this program, we make it easier for these members to go to the dentist on a regular basis as is recommended by medical professionals. A lot of these union members are new to their jobs, especially those coming from blue-collar backgrounds who haven’t had the opportunity to take advantage of dental benefits before.”
