CDCR/CCHCS Announce Expected CAC Closure Date

Article published on June 30, 2023

SEIU Local 1000 has been informed by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation and California Correctional Health Care Services that the California City Correctional Facility, or CAC, is projected to close by March 31, 2024.

After learning that the CAC is slated for closure, and with the short timeline to negotiate this closure and its impact on Local 1000 represented, we are preparing for pre-mitigation through the Voluntary Transfer Process or VTP.

Our goal in pre-mitigation is to support every represented worker at this facility and to ensure that impacted workers are fully informed on all the options available to them to make this decision and that those same represented workers are respected during this process.

We have received the State’s proposed closure date of March 31, 2024, and proposed for VTP to begin August 3, 2023. More information will be shared as we receive it from the State regarding the timeline and impacts of this closure.

We intend to negotiate the terms of the VTP. VTP is the opportunity for impacted employees to take control of their career path, find ways to retain positions, and give workers the ability to make decisions about where they could be reassigned.

Our Union plans to stay deeply involved in the entire closure process. We are building a team to negotiate and mitigate impacts to employees related to the CAC closure.
