Upward mobility is a union value, and our groundbreaking Apprentice program is offering three new opportunities for our members currently working as Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVNs). We’re offering our second application period for the LVN-to-RN Pre-apprenticeship at three different schools, plus two new LVN-to-RN Apprenticeships, one at Riverside City College and one at San Joaquin Delta College.
LVN-to-RN Pre-apprenticeship Application Period Now Open
In partnership with California Correctional Health Care Services (CCHCS), we are launching a second application period for the LVN-to-RN Pre-apprenticeship Program. This pre-apprenticeship will support LVNs in completing the science-based prerequisites in an effort to gain entry into one of our LVN-to-RN Apprenticeships.
Coursework will be delivered by one of three participating colleges: San Joaquin Delta College, Sacramento City College, and Riverside City College. Cost for tuition and books associated with the course work will be covered by a new California Apprenticeship Initiative grant, and preapprentices may be granted paid release time to support their school attendance.
Sacramento City College and San Joaquin Delta College are offering the Pre-Apprenticeship program for ten different state institutions. At Riverside City College, the offer extends to a dozen different institutions.
LVNs are provided two years to finish the program, affording ample time to successfully complete the required science courses and Nursing Transition courses. Additionally, once LVNs have completed all coursework requirements for the apprenticeship program, they will be eligible to receive a one-time reimbursement for nursing school entrance exam fees. Applications are now being accepted for LVN-to-RN apprentices at San Joaquin Delta College
We’re recruiting new applicants to the LVN-to-RN Apprenticeship program, with classes planned to begin in January 2024. LVNs attending the program retain their permanent positions while gaining the requisite skills and competencies to become RNs through a combination of classroom theory, clinical experience, and on-the-job training.
Members from ten different state institutions are eligible.
Our contract language provides partial time off work without loss of pay (“20/20 time”) for apprentices to participate in classes and clinicals. Grant funding from SEIU HCAP, along with new funding from the High Road Apprenticeship Program initiative, will cover most of the costs associated with participation in this apprenticeship program removing the financial burden many working learners face when returning to school.
