Unit 17’s bargaining team went to the table today to address workload and scheduling issues that challenge our nurses as we struggle to provide the highest possible standard of care. As we worked through these issues, we also continued to press upon the state that an underlying staffing problem is at the root of these and many other problematic issues in the unit.

We signed our first tentative agreement with the state today on changes in shift assignments. The new language the state agreed to says that a nurse who receives only a 15-day notice of change in permanent shift assignment may receive an additional 15 days upon request.

We also gave the state a proposal that would address the unrealistic expectations of workload completion at CDPH. The proposal would prevent punitive actions when a nurse is unable to complete a report in a timely manner because of circumstances beyond that nurse’s control.

Unit 17 returns to the table on Friday where we will continue to discuss issues such as these that affect the working conditions of nurses in state service.

A great contract happens when we show the state that our members are “all in.” Support your bargaining team – purple up, stand up, and send your photos to [email protected].
