After a month of working through the themes of working conditions, health and safety, leaves and professional development, your bargaining team spent this week focusing on issues of compensation. In addition to asking for a 22 percent across-the-board raise for all the state workers we represent, our individual units also pressed the state on compensation issues that affect their members, such as classification adjustments and differentials.

Unit 11’s bargaining team went to the table today and presented the state with four proposals that will more appropriately compensate Unit 11 members for the technical skills and services they provide to the State of California. We proposed:

  • Water Resources Classification Series Adjustment: The Unit 11 bargaining team brought in three Water Resources Technician IIs to serve as subject matter experts about the skilled and diverse duties in this series. These members presented numerous problems with the entire series of the classification and they presented the state with a proposal that would go a long way in correcting many of the long standing issues.
  • Transportation Engineering Classification Series Adjustment: For this adjustment proposal, two Transportation Engineering Technicians and two Materials and Research Engineering Associate (specialists) served as subject matter experts. These two groups presented the state with a unified front to identify, explain and address the compensation issues that have been plaguing these classifications.
  • Safety footwear: Caltrans and DWR: Because quality protective footwear is crucial for so many members of our Unit to be able to perform their duties, we proposed that the reimbursement for eligible employees be raised from $100 to $150 and that it be made available every 12 months instead of 18.
  • Technical Classification Consolidation, DOT: To better represent our members and support the duties they perform, we proposed converting DOT employees that are Delineators, Senior Delineators or Landscape Technicians into Transportation Engineering Technicians and that no employee should suffer a loss in base salary from the conversion.

Unit 11’s bargaining team returns to the table May 17. We will continue to work for increases in compensation as well as the other priorities our members outlined for us through participation in surveys and the town halls.

Support your bargaining team! A great contract happens when we show the state that our members are “all in.” Purple up, stand up, and send your photos to photos@seiu1000.org
