Statement from President Yvonne R. Walker on the State of the Union Address

During a time when our leaders should be focused on strengthening the middle class, President Trump’s State of the Union centered on his only legislative accomplishment: a tax break for billionaires and corporations. The truth is, the Trump administration has done nothing to help families put food on the table, pay for college, receive affordable health care or retire with dignity.

Unions are the ones standing up and fighting for the middle class. In California, SEIU Local 1000 negotiated the largest contract in state history, with double-digit raises across the board. This week, I received a call from a member who said because of our union and the contract, she received the biggest pay increase of her career. Strong unions will rebuild our middle class.

Over the past year, President Trump has preyed on the vulnerable, from calling victims of sexual assault liars, to making racially inflammatory comments, to tearing apart families through deportation. We stand on the front lines holding those who engage in sexual misconduct accountable, fighting for equality and putting pressure on politicians so DREAMers and TPS holders are protected. Strong unions are the ones fighting for American values.

In the face of unprecedented adversity, SEIU Local 1000 members are more united than ever. We will continue to fight for all Californians to have a good life, live in sustainable communities and enjoy the fruits of social, economic and environmental justice.
