Our Union’s Bargaining Unit 15, representing Statewide CSC (Correctional Supervising Cooks) Food Services, recently met with CalHR, CDCR, and CCHCS to address various issues affecting our operations statewide. We raised concerns on the following topics:
- Equipment Repair and Replacement
- Incarcerated Workers
- Vacation Cap or Cashout
We are collaborating with the state to find solutions to the challenges posed by maintaining a capable incarcerated workforce. The combination of malfunctioning equipment and a limited workforce has reached a critical point, impacting our ability to perform our duties safely and efficiently.
“Food service within correctional facilities is essential to the well-being of incarcerated individuals, but the lack of functioning equipment is severely hindering its effectiveness and efficiency. This presents a critical operational challenge for maintaining proper nutrition and meeting the daily needs of the population.” — Pete Garza, Correctional Supervising Cook
Additionally, we expressed concerns regarding the accumulation of vacation hours due to difficulties in taking time off. We suggested allowing a Vacation Cashout this year; however, we will not receive a definitive answer until the May Budget Revise.
