CDCR layoff update
11:31 AM - August 24, 2010
Unit 1 continues to monitor the status of 180 Unit 3 employees
who transferred last March to Unit 1 positions in lieu of layoff.
It’s been a difficult transition for many. William Hall, one of
about a dozen Unit 1 Statewide Bargaining Advisory Committee
(SBAC) members who volunteered to call Unit 3 transfers, says:
“They are mourning the loss of their prior teaching positions.
The transition to analytical work, and the management style that
goes with it, can be a challenge.”
Despite the difficulties, the majority report that they’re being
trained and supported by peers and supervisors. However, about a
half -dozen individuals have received negative probationary
evaluations. In some cases the placement just wasn’t a good fit;
in other cases there has been a serious lack of training and an
unsupportive work environment.
Three members who had been transferred to Unit 1 in lieu of
layoff represented Local 1000 in two meetings with CDCR
Headquater Labor Relations to review training issues. They are
Beverly Heroux from CDCR Facility Planning, Construction and
Management in Sacramento; Tony Narvais from Richard A.
McGee Training Center in Galt; and Elma Rodriguez in Wasco.
If you’ve received a negative probationary evaluation, or know
someone who has, please refer them tounit1@seiu1000.org or
