We are excited to announce that we are now accepting applications for the LVN to RN Apprenticeship Program at Bakersfield College (BC) for an October 2024 cohort start. First launched in 2015, this program has been our longest running apprenticeship, and we are excited to see its expansion into Kern County. This apprenticeship was developed as a collaborative effort by SEIU Local 1000 and California Correctional Health Care Services (CCHCS) to provide meaningful upward mobility to LVNs in working in the correctional environment.
Our contract language provides partial time off work without loss of pay (“20/20 time”) for apprentices to participate in classes and clinicals. Additionally, many of the costs associated with participation in this apprenticeship program are covered by funds from the new High RoadSM Training Partnership (HRTP) initiative offered through the California Workforce Development Board (CWDB), removing the financial burden many working learners face when returning to school. The program at Bakersfield College lasts approximately 15 months.
Presently, this application period is open to full-time LVNs working at one of the following institutions:
- Avenal State Prison
- California Correctional Institution
- California State Prison Corcoran
- Kern Valley State Prison
- North Kern State Prison
- Pleasant Valley State Prison
- Substance Abuse Treatment Facility
- Wasco State Prison
Information Sessions:
Information sessions will be held virtually on Microsoft Teams Monday, July 15, 2024, from 3:30 to 4:30 PM and on Wednesday, July 17, 2024, from 3:30 to 4:30 PM. Representatives from SEIU Local 1000, CCHCS, and BC will be in attendance to answer questions about the program. Details are below:
