April 22 is Earth Day, and on Saturday, April 24, the SEIU Local 1000 Environmental Committee is taking part in the first public celebration of Earth Day in Sacramento since the pandemic began.

The theme for this year’s celebration is IN THIS TOGETHER! It’s an opportunity for people to gain practical knowledge and the means to take care of our planet. The event is free, and thousands of attendees are expected to attend throughout the day.

Our Environmental Committee will be on-site with a booth, and you’re invited to volunteer for a shift. Read more about this opportunity below.

About the Environmental Committee

The Environmental Committee is one of 10 different Human Rights Committees supported by Local 1000. Our Union’s Purpose Statement encourages us to seek “social, economic, and environmental justice for our represented employees and all Californians.”

Eddie Isaacs is a member-leader and the Chair of the Environmental Committee. He’s been in state service for nearly 20 years. He’s been a Union Steward for 15 years and is part of our contract bargaining team.

Eddie works at CalTrans District 7 (Los Angeles) as an Environmental Planner, and he shares the mission statement of the committee: The SEIU Local 1000 Environmental Committee provides a roadmap for SEIU Local 1000 members to proactively lead the cause of environmental justice and activism within our communities, across California, and around the world.

At work, in his community, and at home, Eddie believes in and works toward a more sustainable earth. He believes that our individual actions can create less waste, fewer emissions, and thereby reduce adverse impacts on our planet.

Member-leaders Karen Jefferies (Bargaining Unit 4 Chair) and DLC 766 President Shrhonda Ward join Eddie Issacs as committee members.
