Our Unit 14 bargaining team met with the State’s bargaining team on Tuesday July 9th, 2019 to talk about the changing nature of their industry and to call for fair compensation by submitting a special salary adjustment for all 34 of the classifications they represent.

The printing trades have changed a lot over the last few decades, and Unit 14 brought in five subject matter experts from various occupations working at California’s Office of State Publishing to discuss the ways in which current state printers have had to retool their skills and invest time, and effort getting educated and trained in new technologies.

The bargaining team also shared with the State’s bargaining team how multi-faceted state printers have had to be just to keep up with changing industry innovations. Unit 14 leaders also talked about the level of cost savings that keeping state printing in-house generates each year.

Robert Vega, Chair of Unit 14, said “the workers Local 1000 represents in the printing trades create real value for the residents of California. We should be valued as well. The work we do helps make California a California for All.”

The Unit 14 bargaining team that met with the state collectively has over 120 years of experience in the printing trades and represents over 400 California state workers in the field. The unit includes employees at the Office of State Publishing where the state budget, legislative bills and many other state documents are printed. This unit also includes printers and graphic artists in individual departments throughout the state.

Unit 14 will be returning to the bargaining table on July 16.
