Our Unit 11 bargaining team went to the table today to continue to press the state to compensate our members for their skills and experience. We gave the state five proposals that recognize that the work performed by Unit 11 requires specialized knowledge and often contains a heightened risk of injury.

Three of our proposals would increase the current differentials for the following duties:

  • Underwater diving
  • Climbing
  • Commercial Driving

Another proposal would create a differential that the team has been fighting to achieve for a long time: A harness pay/fall protection differential which would apply when a member’s duties require him or her to harness up and engage in an activity that has a danger of falling.

We made a fifth proposal regarding the phlebotomy differential. We proposed that any Unit 11 Laboratory Assistant be compensated for the completion of this hazardous and necessary task. We have won grievances in the past expanding the differential department by department. We explained to the state that making the phlebotomy differential unit-wide makes sense for both fairness and efficiency. In addition, it was time to adjust the amount to accurately reflect the critical work these employees do for the state.

As well as these five proposals, we reached a Tentative Agreement on proposals concerning the Transportation Engineering Technicians (TETs) and Water Resources Technicians (WRTs). The two agreements provide an educational differential to members in those classifications if they achieve the requisite coursework and/or engage in construction field assignments. The team successfully cleaned up the language ensuring that every member deserving the differentials will receive them.

Your Unit 11 bargaining team goes back to the table on May 13. They will be bringing in classification subject matter experts to discuss parity issues as well as other matters of compensation.

Support your bargaining team! A great contract happens when we show the state that our members are “all in.” Purple up, stand up, and send your photos to photos@seiu1000.org
