Local 1000’s Unit 17 bargaining team met with state negotiators today, representing the interests of our members who work as Registered Nurses in state service.

Today’s meeting was a continuation of yesterday’s work on leaves. We are focusing on health and safety this week and the fair and how the equitable use of leaves contribute to the well-being of both our members and the people we serve.

We presented the state with two proposals today regarding leaves:

Today’s meeting was a continuation of yesterday’s work on leaves. We are focusing on health and safety this week and the fair and how the equitable use of leaves contribute to the well-being of both our members and the people we serve.

We presented the state with two proposals today regarding leaves:

  • Vacation Scheduling for the Veterans Homes: We proposed that members at DVA be allowed to use any accrued leave (excluding sick leave) for their vacation. This proposal also includes language providing the opportunity to negotiate a department-wide vacation policy for DVA after bargaining concludes.
  • The second proposal would change the bereavement leave language for Unit 17 to include grandparents-in-law—specifically to include the grandparents of domestic partners.

Along with leave, we discussed workload and distribution of assignments for our members at CDPH and DHCS. We described to the state how their ineffective recruitment and retention practices cause work to build up.

All of the issues we brought to the table today are the result of the state’s haphazard and ineffective staffing and scheduling models. We will continue to remind the state’s team of their need to address this overarching problem as well as the specific issues it creates, throughout negotiations.

The Unit 17 bargaining team returns to the table next week, and will continue to address unit-specific issues.
