Local 1000’s Unit 17 bargaining team met with state negotiators today, representing the interests of our members who work as Registered Nurses in state service.

Leaves and health and safety—both that of our members and of the people we serve—are the focus this week. We identified these priorities through the feedback we received at bargaining town halls and thousands of bargaining surveys. Our other priorities for this contract are workplace conditions, professional development, and compensation

Today’s negotiations with the state all centered on the ability of Unit 17 RNs to schedule and use their vacation days in a reasonable manner. When our members use their vacations to relax and enjoy their families, they return rested and ready to provide the highest level of care to their patients.

We presented the state with proposals today designed to ensure leave is awarded equitably and that it is fostering safe and healthy workplaces:

  • Restructure vacation bidding for RNs in DSH and DDS. Currently, Unit 17 members are put into a bidding pool with other units and other unions. This is illogical as their duties and licenses restrict them from covering for each other and results in last minute scrambling to cover needed shifts. Our proposal would limit bidding to Unit 17 members. It would also eliminate black out days and create a system of using 3 bids (instead of just 2) that would allow the use of all accrued days (except sick days) instead of just vacation days.
  • Standardize vacation policy across CDCR-CCHCS. Currently each facility sets its own vacation policy. We proposed a meet and confer to be thoughtful in creating an overall vacation policy that would work across all 35 facilities.

The Unit 17 bargaining team returns to the table tomorrow, and will continue to address unit-specific issues.

Support your bargaining team! A great contract happens when we show the state that our members are “all in.” Purple up, stand up, and send your photos to photos@seiu1000.org
