Your Union

Your Union

Unions run on people power

Local 1000 builds a strong member-led union by educating, organizing and mobilizing membership in the workplace, political arena and the union itself, to improve the living standard and rights of members, their families and other working people, and to achieve economic and social justice.

Health happens in the workplace

yvonne_oz_web.jpgNew health & wellness project encourages a healthy lifestyle

Local 1000 President Yvonne R. Walker, TV host Dr. Mehmet Oz and several hundred state employees literally took the first steps towards a healthier lifestyle by taking a walk around the block together at the kickoff event for a new health and wellness program.

In order to foster a future culture of healthy choices in the workplace, Local 1000 is partnering with elected officials, state agencies and private foundations to launch this member-led pilot project.

One Voice Town Hall: Political action - accountability from leaders

tami_tom_web.jpgLegislators report back to members who helped get them elected

Political action is not just about helping elect people who support state services; it also includes maintaining a relationship between our members and the people who represent them.

For nearly two months, SEIU members have been holding meetings with political candidates and incumbent legislators to ask questions and discuss legislative priorities.

"It's important that legislators see SEIU members, especially Local 1000 folks like us, as their constituents and active participants in government and politics," said Marc Toft, an Employment Development Department employee from San Francisco.

Call center: A vital resource for members

Effective, timely support

Thousands of Local 1000 members who phone our Member Resource Center (MRC) with questions are getting fast reliable answers provided by trained representatives.

Local 1000's call center has handled nearly 200,000 calls since it opened in November 2009, covering issues important to state workers and the business of Local 1000--contract language, civil service rules and representation. MRC representatives also refer members to other Local 1000 resources including job stewards, union representatives and staff attorneys.

"We want to be able to help our members get the information they need in a timely fashion," said Local 1000 President Yvonne R. Walker. "Whether the question is the time and place of a meeting or a complicated issue involving our contract, it's our job to have answers."
fast and efficient.

Know your rights: Underpaid or Overpaid

Larry Perkins1) The state notified me that I was overpaid. What are my rights?

In order for the state to collect from you, the overpayment has to be within the past three years. The state is required to issue an advance notice to you with the exact amount owed and the reason for the overpayment.

You can dispute the amount of an overpayment notice if you believe it is in error, or you may use leave credits (other than sick days) to satisfy the overpayment.

2) I did not receive my paycheck-- what can I do?

If you do not receive your pay check on payday, contact your departmental payroll office and request a salary advance. If the departmental payroll office is unable to help you, contact your Local 1000 steward or call the Member Resource Center at 866.471.SEIU (7348).

Member's journey: Growing into activism

Maria Patterson understands those state workers who make no effort to get involved in the union or become politically active.
She used to be one.

"I've worked 17 years for the state, but I never really felt inspired until 2008," said Patterson, a custodian for the Department of General Services in Stockton.

"I heard President Yvonne Walker speak, and I decided to get involved a little."
Patterson doesn't do anything halfway - a little activity soon became a lot.
