Article 9.17 State Disability Insurance (SDI)
Your rights
Your union contract contains hundreds of provisions designed to protect your rights. Article 9.17 State Disability Insurance (SDI) is for qualified employees who suffer a non-work related injury or illness. Your Local 1000 contract guarantees:

  • SDI eligibility for any qualified worker covered by the Local 1000 contract.
  • SDI will pay 55 percent of your salary up to $882/week for 52 weeks.
  • Full health, dental and vision premium payments for you and any dependent for a maximum of 26 weeks during your disability.
  • The right to supplement your SDI benefit with leave integration up to 40 hours per month. Employees who wish to use leave integration must do so by contacting their personnel office within one week of being disabled.
  • Use of sick leave, vacation, CTO, holiday, personal leave program (PLP) or annual leave to cover the first seven days not covered by SDI.
  • Six weeks of paid family leave (PFL) for qualified employees. Coverage includes care for the employee’s family members, domestic partner or the birth, adoption or foster care placement of a new child.

How to take Action

Contact your Local 1000 steward if you feel your right to SDI has been violated. Your steward will work with you, management and your contract to determine the best course of action, including whether or not to file a grievance.
