Your right to parental and adoption leave
Article 8.4 Parental Leave and 8.5 Adoption Leave
Your union contract contains hundreds of provisions designed to protect your rights. Article 8.4 and 8.5 defines your right to parental and adoption leave. Your Local 1000 contract guarantees:
 
  • Employees can request up to one year of unpaid leave of absence for pregnancy, child birth, recovery from child birth, the care of the newborn child or adoption of a child.
  • All requests must include beginning and ending dates for the proposed leave and the leave must be requested no later than 30 days after the birth or adoption of the child.
  • Changes can be made to the leave dates and requests can be made more than 30 days after the birth of a child, but are subject to approval of the department head.
  • Health, dental and vision benefits will continue during parental and adoption leave.
  • Existing leave credits may be used for adoption of a child.
 
How to take Action
Contact your Local 1000 steward if your rights have been violated. Your steward will work with you, management and your contract to determine the best course of action, including whether or not to file a grievance.
