Work & Family Participation - Article 8.18
Your rights

Your union contract contains hundreds of provisions designed to protect your rights. Article 8.18 Work and Family Participation defines your right to time off to attend family-related activities and family crisis situations.
 
Your Local 1000 contract guarantees:

• Employees are guaranteed eight hours of paid leave per month to attend their children’s school related activities in addition to using accrued annual leave credit.

• Employees can attend family-related activities -- such as your children’s sports events, recitals, etc. -- using accrued annual leave credit. Family is defined as the employee’s son, daughter or any child the employee is parenting.

• Employees can use annual leave to deal with family crisis -- such as family counseling or emergencies. Family is defined as the parent, stepparent, spouse, domestic partner, child, grandchild, grandparent, brother, sister, stepchild or any person residing in the immediate household.

• Employees may use the Family and Medical Leave Act (Article 8.16) concurrently with this article, if a family crisis meets the definition of a serious health condition.

• Employees may request unpaid leave for family crisis situations if they have exhausted their annual leave.

How to take action
Contact your Local 1000 steward if you feel your Work and Family Participation rights have been violated. Your steward will work with you, management and your contract to determine the best course of action, including whether or not to file a grievance.
